I can’t entirely agree with their list, and I think it might’ve been better had Joe Bob Briggs done the movie reviews. The article reads like it was a reject from Cracked.
They forgot, of course, TBN’s Revolutionary movies, which you can watch here; and now that I come to think of it, Jean-Claude La Marre’s Color of the Cross, which I reviewed on my blog, which was a botched opportunity to make a really poignant Black Jesus movie.
I pretty much agree with the list, except for The Gospel According to Matthew which I think is one of the better films about Jesus. I would have put The Greatest Story Ever Told on the list in its place, although watching Charlton Heston “baptizing” Herod’s soldiers is hilarious.
Lonely Pilgrim,
You are dead on. The Gospel according to Matthew is not only a striking film (whatever you will say about the subtexts), the cinematography alone separates it from all of the other films on this list. The tableau of Mary standing in the arch (shown in the article) is beautiful even if you aren’t Catholic.
That’s too bad… I really like the Miracle Maker in all it’s stop-motion animation glory with mixed-in cartoon animation. The accents are cheesy, but hearing Simon Peter talking with a Scottish accent is pretty cool. :) Jesus mentions the kingdom of God “on earth as it is in heaven” a few times more than you probably hear from other sources, which I kinda think is a good thing.

I have to see the Gospel of Matthew again, but I recall a very frightening Jesus who spews angry phrases over his shoulder looking back. Of course hearing it in Italian reminded me of some of the Sicilian guys I once knew (lol).
Come on! Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter cannot be as bad as it sounds.
I guess “Life of Brian” didn’t make it because of; a) It wasn’t ABOUT Jesus, it was ABOUT Brian and b) It was pretty darn funny.
I was also going to suggest “The Gospel Road” by Johnny Cash, but it too wasn’t about Jesus, it was about Johnny . . . and the music was okay if you like his style.
